The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which involved plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.
