The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
