That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more slowly, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
